BVA school board discusses next week’s meeting
BELLE VERNON – On Monday evening, the Belle Vernon Area School Board discussed the issues that that they think should be addressed at their regular meeting next week. Superintendent Charles chandler brought it to the board’s attention that there are exterior lights in front of the high school that need to be repaired.
“On the way down Crest Avenue, some lights have shorted out and some are missing,” said Chandler.
He advised the board that they have received three bids on the repair of the lights.
“There was one bid that was just under $10,000,” said Chandler, adding that one was exactly $10,000 and the other bid came in at $11,000.
“We could take it from bond money or we could do it with bids,” he said, explaining the options that could be decided upon at the school board meeting.
Chandler said that that because it would cost at least $6,000 for equipment to fix the lights in-house, he believes it would be cheaper for the board to award the contract to an outside bidder.
In another matter, director Harve Anderson brought up the content of the syllabus at the middle school, as he previously requested discussion and/or action on this subject.
“I believe that by December we were going to have some sort of outline, and I would like to follow up on that at the meeting,” said Anderson.
At an earlier meeting, Anderson said he would like to see a consistency in syllabus material.
At next week’s meeting the board will also discuss communications from several individuals and organizations.
Chad Himmler, high school director of bands, informed the board that Steven Spang, a junior at Belle Vernon Area High School was selected to participate in the Music Educators National Conference All-East Band. He called it a “distinguished honor” that was the result of a lot of hard work. He is requesting that the board provided financial assistance in the amount of approximately $1,705.00 to assist with expenses for him and Spang to attend the conference scheduled for March 6 through 9 2003 in Providence, Rhode Island.
The board also received a request from Robb Jenkins, high school social studies instructor, to take the advanced placement U.S. history and European history classes on a trip to Washing D.C. April 3, 4 and 5 at no cost to the school district.
The board will also make a decision about a request from Betsy Sheehan School of Dance to use their high school facilities for recitals on June 6 and 7.
