Group makes changes to 50th Coal Show
CARMICHAELS – The King Coal Association Several has made changes in the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Show to celebrate the 50th Coal Show Aug. 16 to 23, 2003. A dinner will be held in the Carmichaels fire hall Saturday, Aug. 16, for the past coal queens and the candidates for 2003 coal queen. Details will be released later.
The 50th Coal Queen Pageant will be held in the 1,400-seat State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown on Sunday, Aug. 17. This change is due to proposed remodeling of the Carmichaels Area High School auditorium. Ticket sales and other details will be decided at a later date.
Brice Rush was appointed chairman for the proposed 50th year hardback book, which will include pictures of all the past coal queens and candidates, resumes of each queen and pertinent details of the past 49 Coal Shows.
Rush is seeking information of historical significance for inclusion in the book. Anyone with interesting details, photographs and printed materials for the past years should contact him at King Coal Association, Box 275, Carmichaels, Pa. 15320. The book will contain selected programs from the first Coal Shows and many photographs.
The hardback book will be black with gold lettering with the theme “King Coal – Golden Memories.” The KCA is sponsoring a contest for the cover design, and suggestions are to be submitted to Sandy Bruce, 100 Park Ave., Carmichaels, by April 1. All entries become the property of KCA. The winner will receive a $100 bond.
Also, the KCA directors approved a $50 donation to United Way of Greene County, and $100 to Tri-County Leathernecks’ “Toys for Tots.”
King Coal officers elected for 2003 are Mike Riggen, president; Emil Bertugli, first vice president; Sara Ruth, second vice president; Kim Bartley, secretary; Brice Rush, treasurer; and Thelma Callaghan, publicity director.
The next KCA meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. in the fire hall at Carmichaels.
