Residents urged to apply for LIHEAP funding

2 min read

With colder temperatures and winter weather conditions approaching, state Rep. Bill DeWeese (D-Waynesburg) reminds area residents who may need help paying their heating bills that Pennsylvania’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is accepting applications. DeWeese said LIHEAP helps low-income individuals and families pay their heating bills through cash grants and assists with emergencies such as furnace breakdowns or unexpected fuel shortages. Sign-up for the program began this week.

“LIHEAP has proven to be invaluable in helping Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens endure the cold winter months,” DeWeese said. “For senior citizens and families living on low and fixed incomes, this program is a true benefit when faced with exorbitant heating fuel bills.”

LIHEAP grants are based on income, family size, regional cost of living and heating fuel types. Income eligibility limits are based on the federal poverty income guidelines, which can be obtained by calling the toll-free LIHEAP hotline at 866-857-7095 or visiting a local county assistance office. Under this year’s program, a family of four who earns up to $24,435 a year would qualify for assistance.

DeWeese emphasized that funding for LIHEAP is limited, and he advised area residents who believe they might qualify to apply as soon as possible. The deadline to apply is March 27.

Residents who have additional questions or who need help applying are encouraged to contact DeWeese’s constituent service office in Waynesburg at 724-627-8683.
