Forgery and theft
A 29-year-old Uniontown man is facing various theft and forgery charges for three incidents that occurred at the homes of elderly Uniontown residents between Sept. 6 and Oct. 4, state police said.
Kevin Ray Deberry is facing charges for all incidents, while Melissa Dawn Deberry faces charges for one of the incidents.
Police said on Sept. 6 between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m., Kevin Deberry allegedly went to the home of Lettie Mae Mannaway, 86, of Coolspring Street and asked for a glass of water. When she went into the kitchen to get water, Deberry allegedly took her wallet containing credit cards, money and her checkbook.
Deberry allegedly forged Mannaway’s name to one of the checks and cashed it at National City Bank in the amount of $300, police said.
He is facing charges of forgery, theft by deception and theft by unlawful taking and was jailed after failing to post $20,000 percentage bond set by District Justice Deberah Kula, police said.
In the second incident, police said Kevin Deberry allegedly went to the Elm Road home of Emma Hladinec, 74, and talked his way inside sometime on Oct. 3 or 4. Once inside he allegedly stole her checkbook. Melissa Deberry then allegedly forged a check for $300 and attempted to cash it at First National Bank in Uniontown but could not when the bank teller questioned the validity of the check.
The third incident occurred on Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. when Kevin Deberry went to the Warden Street home of Margret C. Zahradnick, 81, and asked to use the telephone. He allegedly took her wallet with money, credit cards and her driver’s license. The wallet was ditched behind the city police/fire department building and was recovered by state police. Deberry was charged with theft and jailed in the Westmoreland County Jail after failing to $20,000 bond. Melissa Deberry was released pending a preliminary hearing.
