Hugo Carmel Giannini

Hugo Carmel Giannini, (Ugo Giannini) 89, longtime resident of Point Marion, Pa., passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2002, in the Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 7, 1913, in Pedivigliano, Italy, a son of the late Rosalbino and Petronilla Sirianni Giannini. He attended a boarding school in Frascati, Italy, and came to the United States through Ellis Island in New York as a young teen-ager. Arriving in Point Marion, he worked for a time at the L.J. Houze Glass Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in the 939th Field Artillery Battalion in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Hugo was the first man drafted into World War II from Point Marion. In later years, he, along with his wife, Teresa Anna, owned and operated the Venice Tavern at Morris Crossroads, where his homemade pizza was famous throughout the area.

A devout member of St. Hubert’s R.C. Church, Hugo was active in other community organizations, including past president of the F.O.E #1932, the VFW Post 747, and the American Legion Post 499, all of Point Marion. He was an avid fan of West Virginia University Mountaineer football and basketball teams.

Hugo will be remembered for his loyalty to his family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Teresa Anna Altomare Giannini, on Feb. 28, 1983, and by a sister, Assunta G. Cupelli, and brothers Richard and Michael Giannini.

Surviving are his loving daughter, Regina Kathryn Giannini of Point Marion, and stepdaughter, Mary Shriver of Tucson, Arizona.

Friends will be received in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, on Sunday from noon to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday until 10:30 a.m., when prayers will be said, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Hubert’s R.C. Church, with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Sredzinski as celebrant. Interment follows in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion, with military rites accorded at the graveside by the VFW Post 747 and the American Legion Post 499. Parish Rosary service will be held Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
