Edward (Ace) Hanko, 77, of Crucible, Pa., died Sunday, September 29, 2002 at 5:15 p.m. after a lengthy illness in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa. He was born January 1, 1925 in Crucible, Pa., son of the late Stephen Hanko and Susanna Valent Hanko.

He was preceded in death by brothers Stephen, Paul, Andrew and John Hanko and sisters Millie Wojtowicz and Alice Botamer.

On June 24, 1950 he married Dorothy Varesko Hanko, who survives.

He was a retired coal miner from Humphreys Mine 7 in Blacksville, W.Va. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was a lifelong resident of Crucible and was a member of Crucible Citizens Club, Moose Lodge 819, UMWA Local 1058 and VFW Post 3491. As a young man, he was a well-known sandlot baseball player.

Besides his wife Dorothy, he is also survived by four daughters Cynthia Giler and husband Mark of Pasedena, Md., Victoria J. Dagan and husband William of Downingtown, Pa., Christine Buttermore and husband Rick of Carmichaels and Pamela S. Stephens and husband Kevin of Buckhannon, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Erin and Jaime Kelley; two sisters Anna Thomas of Carmichaels and Eleanor Kronjak of Macedonia, Ohio.

Friends will be received in the PAUL M. LESAKO FUNERAL HOME INC., Carmichaels, Pa., today from 2 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. where services will be held with the Rev. John Bauer officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Crucible, Pa.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 400.
