MVH health center offers lipid/glucose screening
CALIFORNIA – Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Healthy Directions health education resource center at 310 Third St. in California will present a lipid/glucose screening and educational programs and participate in national observances in October. The lipid/glucose testing will run from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The cost is $12 per person and a 12-hour fast will be required. Results of the screening will be sent to the individual’s physician.
Lipids are organic compounds such as fatty acids, waxes and steroids stored in the body and serving as energy reserves. Lipidosis is a disorder of the fat metabolism in the body.
Glucose is a simple sugar that serves as the major energy source in the body. Determination of glucose levels is important in the diagnosis of many disorders, including diabetes.
Meanwhile, Health Directions will present an educational program on “Depression Or The Blues?” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8. Another informational presentation, “How To Detect Breast Cancer,” is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Also in October, Healthy Directions will participate in the observances of these national health events: Brain Injury Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Family Eye Care Month and Lupus Awareness Month. Free information will be available on these topics during regular business hours throughout the month.
On-site laboratory services are offered Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to noon at Healthy Directions in California. A doctor’s prescription is required for all laboratory tests conducted at Healthy Directions. Blood drawn and urine specimens collected at the California station will be tested at the laboratory at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Results of the testing will be sent to the physician designated by the patient.
In addition, free blood pressure testing also is conducted Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Healthy Directions in California is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
In addition to special programs and screenings, Healthy Directions offers a health education resource library of books, pamphlets, videos and other information. A referral service also is available, as well as private health education counseling.
