Frances E. Cross Ryland Mawhinney

Frances E. Cross Ryland Mawhinney, 98, of Tarrs, Pa., died Friday, October 4, 2002, in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh. She was born June 8, 1904, in Ruffsdale, Pa., a daughter of Harry A. and Margaret (Harbaugh) Cross.

She was a graduate of the former Hurst High School in Mount Pleasant, Pa., and also Slippery Rock Normal School (now Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania).

She was a member of Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church in Tarrs and the Ladies Auxiliary of the East Huntingdon Township Volunteer Fire Department.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, E. Stanton Ryland, her second husband, Joseph G. Mawhinney in 1992, four sisters, Cora Beshore, Mary Baker, Mabel Ludwig and Dorothy Gault, a brother, Lt. Col. James Cross, and her parents.

She is survived by two daughters: Joanne Ryland of Tarrs and Carol Shannon of Republic, Pa.; a granddaughter Dana Valente, and a grandson, Mark Valente, of Republic; three special grandchildren: Patrick Gault, Christopher Gaffney, and Aaron Gaffney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 406 East Washington Street, Mount Pleasant, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. where Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 7, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ralph Mostoller officiating.

Interment will follow in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Tarrs.
