Lower Tyrone officials approve road bonds

By Jackie Beranek 2 min read

LOWER TYRONE TWP. – The township supervisors approved two road bonds during their regular meeting Tuesday. The first bond was an agreement between the township and Eutsey Lumber Co. of Scottdale to protect Keffer Road while the logging company removes trees from the area. Solicitor Richard Husband said the lumber company agreed to pay $12,500 per mile for damage done to Keffer Road after the logging operation.

The second bond that the supervisors approved was in the same amount for River Road. Husband said Fabian Lumber Co. of White would remove trees from that area.

In other unrelated matters, the supervisors agreed to distribute $4,999.38 in Foreign Fire Insurance money to the Dawson Fire Company. Husband said this distribution is something the supervisors do annually.

The supervisors also re-adopted an agility resolution with PennDOT, allowing the township to do work on state roads in exchange for PennDOT doing roadwork in the township at no cost.

Last month, resident Sharon Ferris asked the supervisors to check into an agreement between the Dawson Grange and the township pertaining to a baseball field next to the Grange. Ferris asked that the baseball field be turned over to the Grange since no one is using it.

This month, Husband said he checked into it but he’s not sure the ball field can be returned to the Grange because a $15,000 Department of Community Affairs recreational grant was used to make several improvements to the field.

“I can’t find my copy of the actual grant agreement that was signed by the township,” said Husband. “I’ve asked the secretary (Linda Hiles) to see if she can find the document so I can take a look at it.”

Husband said he does remember that the grant application was probably submitted in December 1990, but he said he doesn’t think the township received the grant until 1992.

“I remember that there was actual engineering work that was done when the supervisors applied for the grant,” said Husband. “There were engineering drawings and a plan of the area because we had to have that to apply for the grant.”
