Luzerne supervisors award contract for logging at park
LUZERNE TWP. – The township supervisors awarded a logging contract for Patsy Hillman Park to the highest bidder Tuesday. Stump Creek Lumber of Punxsutawney bid $91,500 to log the park.
Park officials accepted bids on the contract earlier this summer, a move that caused some controversy between supervisors at Luzerne Township, who said they were kept out of the loop on the decision.
Supervisor Ron DeSalvo said bids accepted this time were higher than those the park board received the first time. The board has said the money from the logging could help boost the park’s income, allowing for renovations of roads and restrooms and possibly construction of an amphitheater.
As part of the motion to accept the bids, the park board’s spending of the money is subject to approval by the township and Brownsville Borough officials.
“We want some say-so on what projects they undertake,” DeSalvo said.
Solicitor Jack Purcell said that all parties should have a say in how the money at the park is spent. He suggested that a separate bank account be opened for the money.
“It’s a good situation for the park, the borough and the township,” he said.
Supervisor Ted Kollar said some residents are concerned about what trees will be cut. He said Stump Creek has met all the specifications and will not cut trees within 100 yards of any park pavilion and will cut only trees 12 inches in diameter.
The supervisors also set trick-or-treat for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Children 12 and under must be under adult supervision. Residents who wish to participate must turn on their porch lights.
And, theyromoted Robert Miller to assistant director of the office of emergency management.
