Relay for Life campaign nets $203,000
Officials for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life recently announced that they had raised $203,000 this year, surpassing their goal of $200,000. The announcement was made at the group’s annual awards dinner.
Money raised through the Relay for Life will be used in the following ways:
– To help local cancer patients with financial and emotional support.
– To provide funds for educational programs aimed at early detection and prevention of cancer.
– To support life-saving research projects.
Among those honored at the dinner were the Frederick, Gebe Team, which raised the most money of any team in the event. The Frederick, Gebe Team was also honored for being the second-highest, fund-raising team in the state. It’s the second year in a row that the team has earned that honor.
Other top teams honored for their local efforts were the Denise R. Smiley Team, which captured second place; the Wal-Mart Team, which finished third; and the Planet Wireless Team, which finished fourth. Various other awards for team fund-raising, tent decoration and camp cuisine were also presented.
Steve Swanson, past chairman of the Pennsylvania Division, shared information about programs at work in Fayette County, and local staff members answered questions.
Outgoing chairman John McDermott was also honored for his nine years of service to the event. The committee presented McDermott with a special plaque and gift.
