Samuel W. Hoover, 88, of Fairchance, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Highlands Hospital. He was born Oct. 2, 1914, at Hoover Farm, Keffer, Pa., son of the late Charles Samuel Hoover and Emma Clifford Hoover.

Sam was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving at Okinawa, Asiatic Pacific Area during World War II.

He was a retired coal miner and former owner of Hoover’s Tavern.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Otto Hoover and Edward Hoover, and his former wife, Ida “Pete” Hoover.

Surviving are two children, Mrs. Kenneth (Patricia) Cooley of Cranberry Township, Pa., and Lloyd K. (Patches) Hoover and his wife, Rita of Uniontown, Pa.; four grandchildren, Lois Cooley Schirra, Barbara Cooley Moore, Kenneth Lloyd Cooley and Craig K. Hoover; great-grandchildren, Nathan Schirra, Rachel Schirra, Lindsay Jean Moore, Anthony J. Moore, Shawn Cooley, Emma Cooley, Joseph P. Hoover, Aaron K. Hoover and Jesse S. Hoover; a brother, Verner Hoover of Widier, Calif.; and a sister, Mary Struble of Norton, Ohio.

The family will receive friends in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church St., Fairchance, Pa., today from 1 to 3 p.m., the hour of service, with the Rev. Russ Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery Veteran’s Section, Fairchance, Pa., with military rites being accorded by AMVETS Post 103 of Hopwood. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation.
