Annual Academic League contests begin

1 min read

WAYNESBURG -Waynesburg College recently began hosting, for the second year, the Tri-County Academic League for its 2002-2003 competitions. The Tri-County Academic League is made up of honor students from seven school districts in Greene, Washington and Fayette counties: Albert Gallatin Area, Avella, Carmichaels Area, Central Greene, Jefferson-Morgan, Southeastern Greene and West Greene.

The league consists of a junior league (students in grades five through eight) and a senior league (students in grades nine through 12).

“This competition challenges the students academically and provides them with an opportunity for interaction with other honor students from neighboring schools,” said Michael Rapach, president of the Tri-County Academic League and gifted education and Russian language teacher at Waynesburg Central High School.

The Academic League started about eight years ago and uses Patrick’s Press, Inc. in Georgia for the academic competition questions. This year, students will compete in four matches from October through December.

A tournament then will be held at the Waynesburg College Performing Arts Center in February. The winners of this tournament move to the playoffs, sponsored by Intermediate Unit 1. Winners of the playoffs continue to the statewide competition in Harrisburg this spring.

For more information on the league, call Rapach at 724-316-0916.
