Specialist to deliver lectures
WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg College will host two lectures by Dr. Robert Wuthnow, a specialist on religion and culture in the contemporary United States, on Tuesday. Wuthnow will speak on “Ethics in the Marketplace: Does Faith Matter?” at the chapel worship service at 11 a.m. in Alumni Hall, third floor of Miller Hall. He will then present a keynote address entitled “Christian Faith and the New Challenges of Religious Diversity” at 7:30 p.m. in the college’s Performing Arts Center. Both lectures are free and open to the public.
Wuthnow is a professor of sociology and the director of the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University. He will visit Waynesburg College as part of the Christ and Culture Lecture Series, a program sponsored by the college chaplain’s office.
The series addresses issues involved with relating the Christian faith to the tasks of scholarship, citizenship and moral reasoning.
Wuthnow’s recent books include “Creative Spirituality: The Way of the Artist,” “After Heaven: Spirituality in America Since the 1950s,” and “Loose Connections: Joining Together in America’s Fragmented Communities.”
Additionally, Wuthnow edited the recent “Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion,” and is directing a project, “The Public Role of Mainline Protestantism,” funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
“Waynesburg College is eager to have Dr. Wuthnow visit our campus and share his vast expertise of Christian scholarship in the field of sociology,” said Rev. Thomas B. Ribar, Waynesburg College chaplain.
“Dr. Wuthnow’s visit reflects our commitment to provide the opportunity for our students, faculty and staff to interact with scholars of the highest caliber who also take seriously the impact of the Christian faith on the task of higher education. “
