The Earth sciences department at California University of Pennsylvania has been awarded an environmental education grant for $9,375 from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The grant monies will be used to support a seven-member committee in needs assessment and planning for a Conservation/Education Organization Teacher Preparation model. The purpose of the model is to provide support for strengthening the environmental education standards and pedagogy in teacher preparation programs, and to establish statewide standards for public school teachers for earth sciences.

The committee includes Dr.s Larry Moses, Tom Wickham, Tom Mueller, Robert Vargo, Chad Kauffman, and Daria Nikitina from the earth sciences department; Dr. John Shimkanin from the education department; and Geraldine Jones, dean of the college of education and human services. This committee is in the first stages of planning and identifying its needs.

Karen Chan, a library assistant professor at California University of Pennsylvania, has published an article in “Cataloging & Classification Quarterly” (CCQ), a prestigious refereed journal in the field of library science.

Chan said she did an interview with Jean Hirons, CONSER Coordinator at The Library of Congress. The title of the article is “From AACR Revision to CONSER SCCTP: An Interview with Jean Hirons.” It can be found in CCQ 32:4.

Sible appointed

Paul Sible is a new assistant professor in the California University of Pennsylvania computer science department.

He has a bachelor of science in math/computer science from Cal U and master of science in computer science from West Virginia University. He has started doctorate level coursework.

He was an instructor within the full-time faculty in computer science at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, W.Va., for three years. Among his professional activities, Sible presented a topic titled “A Bridge to Learning First Year Computing Concepts” at the Appalachian College Association’s Technology Summit in October 2000 and presented a topic titled “Device Sharing Among ACA Institutions Using the Sense of Touch in Human-Computer Interaction” at the 2001 summit. He was involved in research at WVU in July 2001 in the West Virginia Virtual Environments Laboratory, working on texturing 3D images, and at Alderson-Broaddus College in July 2001, working with a Phantom Haptics Device and integrating the sense of touch into the computer experience.

Funding received

Seven of California University of Pennsylvania’s future science and mathematics teachers have received a collective $28,000 in scholarship funds from the National Science Foundation.

The Collaboration for Excellence in Teacher Preparation in Pennsylvania (CETP-PA) program targets high achieving, full-time graduate or undergraduate students, who plan to be secondary mathematics or science teachers, or elementary education teachers with a major in mathematics or science. All attend schools that are part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

The Cal U students who received these grants for the Spring 2002 semester are: Nicole Booze, secondary education physics; Jackie Jeffers, secondary education biology; Alyssa Kutska, secondary education mathematics; Jeffrey McGowan, secondary biology certification; Brandi Magill, biology; Mychele Sakolsky, secondary education mathematics; and Meghan Sweeny, chemistry education.
