Puberty program offered Flu vaccines slated

During the month of November, Frick Hospital will sponsor several clinics throughout the community to provide flu vaccines.

The influenza vaccine is available for a nominal fee of $12. Medicare Part B and Security Blue are the only insurance plans that will cover the cost of the flu immunization.

Influenza or the flu is an infectious disease caused by the influenza virus. People who get the flu may experience symptoms of fever, chills, headaches, dry cough, muscle aches and may be sick for several days or weeks.

Most people recover quickly, but for some people the flu may be especially severe and pneumonia or other complications may develop, including death.

The elderly or individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease or individuals with severe anemia or lowered risk to infections due to medication or illness are especially at high risk for the flu and its complications.

It is recommended by experts that individuals in these high-risk categories should receive a flu vaccine. Individuals who are allergic to eggs or who have a fever, acute respiratory or other active infections are advised to check with their physician prior to receiving the vaccine.
