Man charged with sexual assault waives hearing
A Clarksville man charged by Uniontown police with multiple counts of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in the City Mission, where he formerly worked as the resident manager of a men’s shelter, waived his preliminary hearing Monday. Donald Ashcraft, 50, of 45 Clark St., Clarksville, Greene County, was then remanded to the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $150,000 cash bond by District Justice Mark Blair.
The victim and her mother went to the city police station on Aug. 2 and reported that Ashcraft assaulted her nine times since July 2001 in the shelter at 226 E. Fayette St., according to a complaint and affidavit of probable cause filed by city Det. Phillip Jones.
The incidents occurred in the shelter almost every weekend from July 2001 until she contacted police, according to the affidavit.
In an audio-taped interview with police, Ashcraft admitted that he engaged in various sexual acts with the victim no more than 10 times in the last year, the affidavit states.
Ashcraft waived his preliminary hearing into nine counts each of statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault, indecent exposure, endangering the welfare of children and aggravated indecent assault.
He no longer works for the mission according to his former boss, Executive Director Irmi Gaut who stressed that the victim was not a mission client.
She declined further comment on the case Monday, but in August, when Ashcraft was arrested, she said extensive background and criminal history checks on him before he was hired two to three years earlier came up clean.
