George H. Kois

George Henry Kois, 79, of Uniontown, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at home. He was born on Feb. 15, 1923, in Rocks Works, Pa., a son of the late George A. and Anne (Baniecki) Kois.

His parents, three brothers, Charles J. Kois, Adam W. Kois and John Kois; and four sisters, Alyce Kubica, Nellie Essling, Rose Volek and Mary Sipos preceded him in death.

Mr. Kois worked for United States Steel Corporation, for 43 years in numerous management positions as a construction engineer. In retirement, Mr. Kois enjoyed caring for his eight antique cars and Belgium draft horses on his 25-acre farm.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Platoon Leader and Technical Sergeant in the United States Army, Company H, 2nd Battalion of the 104th Regiment, 26th Infantry Division.

He was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded in battle on Nov. 7, 1944. Mr. Kois was awarded a Purple Heart for his efforts in the Battle of the Bulge. In addition, he received numerous other awards for his valor during World War II, including the Combat Infantry badge of honor, Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Good Conduct Ribbon, Rhine and Central Europe Ribbon, American Theater and Five Battle Stars, Germany Occupation Victory Medal and the prestigious Presidential Unit Citation.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and Holy Name Society, was a graduate of the International Correspondence School with a degree in Civil and Construction Engineering, was a lifetime member of VFW Post 47, a member of Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, Council No. 1275, the Messmore Rod and Gun Club, the Antique Car Club of Monongahela, the Nash Car Club of America, and Retired Enlisted Association.

A loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, he dedicated his life to his family. He was a very hard working gentlemen, who loved to play the violin and enjoyed horses and antique cars.

He will always be remembered by his family and many friends for his kindness and gentle manner.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Rose Marie Ambrose Kois, with whom he anxiously awaited the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary; two daughters, Miss Jean M. Kois, M.D., of Atlanta, Ga., and Joan (Kois) Woodward and her husband, Ned Harris Woodward of Arlington, Va.; three beloved grandchildren, Sarah Rose Woodward, George William Woodward and Joseph Bishop Woodward; three brothers, Stanley Kois of LaPorte, Ind., Jacob Kois of Warren, Ohio, and Joseph Kois of Mentor, Ohio; three sisters, Ann Wydra Paciorek of Palos Park, Ill., Josephine Sredinski of Balsinger, Pa., and Carolyn Karpinski of San Diego (Carlsbad), Calif.; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOMES INC., 139 West Fayette St., Uniontown, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Monday at 9 a.m., when a blessing service will be held, followed by a Mass of Christian burial in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Alexander L. Pleban and the Rev. Fr. Joseph Sredinski, his nephew, as concelebrants. Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, Pa., where military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 47. St. Joseph’s Christian Mothers, the Holy Name Society and the Catholic Daughters of America, Court 505 of Uniontown, will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m., today in the funeral home. The Knights of Columbus will have honor guard from 7 to 8 p.m., this evening. The Parish Family Vigil service by the ministry of Consolation will be at 7:30 p.m., in the funeral home, this evening.
