Couple rejects plea over child assault charges
A Uniontown couple already serving jail time for abusing a 9-year-old rejected an offer connected with allegedly abusing a 7-year-old in their care. Fayette County District Attorney Nancy D. Vernon offered both April Baxley-Humbert and her husband, James Humbert, a sentence of 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison to run consecutively in addition to six to 23 month-sentence both are already serving.
The two were convicted last October of abusing Betty Jo White, April Humbert’s daughter. They went on the lam, but were captured in Ohio and sentenced to six to 23 months in prison plus an additional six months jail time for failing to go to their sentencing.
While in jail, a 7-year-old boy the couple also cared for told his foster mother that April Humbert had sex with him while James Humbert participated.
The child told state police trooper Jeffrey W. Ramsey that the abuse occurred at his former Bierer Wood Acres home between May 1 and Nov. 11, 2000. Ramsey filed charges of indecent assault and corruption of minors against April Humbert and corruption of minors against James Humbert in June.
The two indicated Monday in court through their respective attorneys that they wanted to take the case to trial.
The two are currently incarcerated in the Fayette County Jail.
