Fly shop opens

Mark A. DeFrank has opened DeFrank’s Flyshop in the Chalk Hill Plaza, Route 40 east. Formerly at the Chalk Hill Superette, this full service shop features custom hand tied flies by DeFrank as well as a variety of fly fishing accessories.

DeFrank has over 20 years of skill and knowledge that he brings with him as well as guiding experience.

Some of the services offered by DeFrank’s include fly tying and fly casting lessons, (tutoring and group), guest speakers and special seminars. The grand opening of his new shop was Saturday and featured a distance and accuracy casting contest, test casting rods and drawings for a Teton reel and Scott Fly rod drawing.

West Mifflin

Mall to hold contest

Century III Mall near West Mifflin is sponsoring an essay competition for local shoppers to nominate the people in their lives who have served as an inspiration or a role model.

The essay contest is one portion of a program called “Ordinary Heroes,’ which celebrates the accomplishments of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.

The program also features a traveling photographic exhibit, commissioned by Simon Property Group Inc. and created by award-winning photographer Tom Casalini. The exhibit will visit nine Simon malls, including Century III, until Veterans Day.

Essay applications are available at the mall’s customer service center. One local winner will be chosen in mid-November and will receive a $100 mall gift certificate. The winner will then join a pool of other winners from participating Simon malls across the country to be judged by a national panel. One grand prize winner will be announced at the end of November. The winner will receive a $1,000 mall gift certificate.

Uniontown

Names sought

In conjunction with the Herald-Standard, the Uniontown Mall will honor local firefighters, paramedics and military personnel.

Mall officials ask residents for names of people to be honored. Residents are urged to stop by the mall’s customer service center and pick up a submission form. The forms should be submitted by Sept. 1 along with a photograph of the person being honored.

During September, the mall will then display the submissions along with the photos in a special “Faces of Freedom” display.

The mall will sell “Hearts of Steel’ bracelets for $10 at its customer service center. All proceeds from the bracelet sale will be donated to the Somerset County Memorial Fund to honor the heroes of Flight 93. For more information, call the mall at 724-437-9411.

Fairchance

Kostingo joins firm

Keith D. Myers, manager of Howard Hanna Myers Real Estate, 20 South Morgantown St., Fairchance, recently announced the addition of Peter Kostingo as a sales associate in the residential division.

Kostingo is a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, and is active as a member of the American legion Post 0398 (Frackville, Pa). He is also a member of the Marine Crop League. He is retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania after 13 years of service.

Kostingo is the father of four children and is a resident of Masontown. He enjoys hunting, fishing and family activities.
