Goodwin honored for mock-trial work Saint Vincent College student Benjamin Goodwin, who recently completed his junior year, has had success with the Latrobe college’s mock-trial team.

He first became involved with the activity when he joined the team his senior year at Albert Gallatin High School.

As a freshman at Saint Vincent, where he majors in economics and political science, Goodwin joined the mock-trial yeam under the supervision of Dr. Gabriel Pellathy, political science professor and pre-law advisor.

For his first tournament at Carnegie Mellon University, he performed as the defense attorney for Saint Vincent and they placed first in that tournament.

By his sophomore year, he became team captain. With the help of his team, he was named “All-Regional Attorney” that year, and the team was undefeated during the fall semester of 2000. At the Regional Tournament in the fall semester of 2001, he earned the title of “All-Regional Attorney.”

This year, the team placed first at the first Case Western mock-trial meet and Goodwin was adjudged the “Best Attorney” in the meet.

This March, at the American Mock Trial Association National Championship Tournament at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., the unified college team, captained by Goodwin, was presented with “The Spirit of AMTA Award” for displaying the ideals of justice, fair play and civility in competition.

Goodwin was named “All-American Mock Trial Attorney,” which ranked him among the top 20 collegiate mock trial attorneys from among the 62 colleges participating in the St. Paul tournament.

Goodwin plans to attend law school locally and eventually head his own firm or become a judge. When he is not on campus, he helps his parents, Agnes and Wilbur Goodwin Sr., run their Smithfield area farm and works for his family’s trucking firm.
