Students honored
Certificate earned Gary Layton of McClellandtown recently received his paralegal certificate from Penn State Fayette.
Layton began taking paralegal courses at Penn State Fayette in September 2000 for the certificate program that is offered by Penn State Fayette’s Office of Continuing Education and Outreach.
He received his bachelor of science degree from Frostburg State College and served as a sergeant in the Vietnam War.
He taught school for two years and then entered the retail and store management workforce for 10 years.
He then operated his own furniture refinishing business for 10 years, and went on to serve in restoration at the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C., restoring antiques from the White House.
Carter on dean’s list
Tara Carter achieved the dean’s list for the spring 2002 semester at Gannon University in Erie..
Majoring in elementary and special education, she is a member of Gannon’s Honors Program and Social Concerns Committee as well as Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Eta Sigma and Lambda Sigma Society.
She will do her student teaching in the fall in Erie.
She is the daughter of Gary and Kathy Carter of Uniontown and granddaughter of Harold and Margaret Carter of Uniontown and Steven and the late Rose Weber of Sewickley.
Research project
Justin Prakorb Isariyawongse was involved in research this summer at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, under the guidance of Dr. Jon Groner who is a pediatric surgeon and the head of the trauma department at Columbus Children’s Hospital.
He is compiling and evaluating statistics from charts of pediatric accident patients admitted to Children’s Hospital in the past 10 years. The objective of the research is to identify factors that may lead to childhood accidents.
Isariyawongse, who completed the first year of medical school in June at Ohio State University, graduated in June, 2001, from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., with a degree in biochemistry/microbiology. Among college activities, he was a senior news staff radio anchor for station WDCR/WFRD. During presidential debates in October, 1999, he was a student volunteer for “Inside Politics” and a CNN television network town meeting runner. In February 2000 during the New Hampshire Primary Election, he worked for Dartmouth Election Network as a chief correspondent for Voter.com. He was an undergraduate teaching assistant in biology and a student admissions representative for “Take Dartmouth Home.” He procured an internship at the C. Everett Koop Institute and procured a Presidential Scholars Research Assistantship with Dr. William Rigby’s Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Immunology Lab. He also received two academic citations.
He is the son of Dr. Prakorb and Saundra Isariyawongse of Brownsville and a 1997 graduate of Brownsville Area High School. His brother, Brandon Kasem, a student at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, was also involved in the same research project this summer.

Chernitsky earns honor
The academic achievements of undergraduates at Vanderbilt University have been honored with publication of the spring 2002 dean’s lists.
To qualify, students must receive grades equivalent to a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the semester.
Laura Ann Chernitsky, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Chernitsky of Uniontown was included among the honorees.
Hayden earns awards
Amy Hayden was recognized with numerous honors and awards at Ohio Northern University’s Honors Day May 4.
She received the Chemistry Alumni Scholarship and the Chemical Rubber Company Chemistry Achievement Award for top student in the chemistry department. She was inducted into Kappa Mu Epsilon, mathematics honor society, and Pi Delta Phi, French honor society. In addition, she achieved the Order of the Omega for academic excellence in the Greek community.
Her majors are chemistry and French, with a minor in mathematics.
She serves as vice president of Kappa Alpha Theta social sorority, is a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, affiliate member of the American Chemical Society and involved with symphonic band, Young Democrats, Alpha Lambda Delta women’s academic society and the French Club.
She studied in France this summer at the universities of Pau and Bayonne.
She is a 2000 graduate of Geibel Catholic High School.
She is the daughter of Bruce and Beverly Hayden of Smithfield and the granddaughter of Alba Yeagle and the late Randall Yeagle of Masontown and Paul and Elaine Hayden of Smithfield.
Cunningham honored
Jamie Cunningham, daughter of Chuck and Candy Cunningham of Smithfield, recently achieved the dean’s list at Western School of Health and Business Careers in Pittsburgh, where she is enrolled in the anesthesia technologist program.
Bixler on dean’s list
Jessica L. Bixler, daughter of Vern and Jamie Bixler of Uniontown, has achieved honors at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
She was named to the dean’s list for the fall and spring semesters of the 2001-2002 academic year.
She also received the UPJ Shaping a Future Scholarship award for the 2002-2003 academic year.
She is majoring in elementary education.
