Woodland group sets meeting for Wednesday
WAYNESBURG – The next program sponsored by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Woodland Owners Group will be held Wednesday at the Greene County Fairgrounds Community Building (Number 14) starting at 7 p.m. There is no cost to attend, and everyone is welcome.
Arlyn Perkey will be the featured speaker. He is a well-known forester working with the U.S. Forest Service in Morgantown, W.Va., and also a neighbor who owns a tree farm in western Greene County. He will give a slide presentation on the crop tree system of managing a forest. He has written numerous articles and booklets on this subject.
Crop tree management may be the tool some have been looking for to care for, improve and enjoy a forest.
It can improve the food supply, shelter and reproductive habitat for wildlife; enhance the forest’s aesthetic appeal; and favor the high value tree species and optimize their growth for increase timber values, according to forester Bill Wentzel.
Arlyn’s talk will prepare the group for a field trip to Cooper’s Rock State Forest in West Virginia on Saturday. There, the group will visit a crop-tree-management area in operation since 1989. The group will be able to see first hand the different crop-tree-management objectives actually implemented in the forest.
The group will meet at the Greene County Fairgrounds (Building 14) at 11:45 a.m., car pool to Cooper’s Rock and return around 5 p.m. Those who wish can stay longer and visit the overlook after the field trip.
