Marjorie E. Schafer

Marjorie E. Watkins Schafer, 99, of Schafer’s Corners, Fayette County, Pa., passed away Thursday, September 12, 2002, in King’s Personal Care Home.

She was born January 25, 1903, on the Watkins Farm, between Brownsville and Centerville, Pa., daughter of the late John Forrest and Nora Effie “Nellie” Grimes Watkins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Schafer in 1988, two sisters, Edith Swagler and Mary Watkins Stout, and two brothers, John Watkins and William Watkins. She is the last member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three children: James Howard Schafer of Cleveland, Ohio, Lucy Jane Truman of Schafer’s Corners with whom she made her home, and Richard Schafer and wife, Loraine, of Uniontown, Pa.; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Marjorie was a member of Brownfield United Methodist Church. She graduated from Centerville High School. After graduating, she attended Penn State and California Normal Schools. She began teaching in Daisytown and then Walkerstown and South Brownsville, teaching two years at each school. After these schools, she also taught at Tobin, Blosser Hill, Nilan, Gans and Fairchance. She taught 20 years in these rural schools.

Marjorie and Oscar married January 21, 1928, and celebrated 60 years of marriage before his death.

Friends will be received in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, Hopwood, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday, September 16, until 11 a.m., the hour of Service with the Rev. Madison Stringfellow officiating.

Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, Brownfield, Pa.
