Awards banquet set Reunion scheduled

On Friday, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa will host the Pitcairn Mailwing Reunion. All activities will take place 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Hardy International Airport at the resort.

The highlight of the day will be Steve Pitcairn, son of aviation pioneer Harold Pitcairn, along with his chief engineer, Mike Posey, flying two of his father’s early Mailwing designs from Trenton-Robbinsville, N.J., to Nemacolin Woodlands.

The 1931 PA-8 was the culmination of the Mailwing series designed by Harold F. Pitcairn to carry the overnight mail between New York and Atlanta. Faster, safer and more efficient than any other aircraft on the market at that time, the Mailwing was immediately brought on as standard equipment by many airlines. Pilots loved the aircraft because of its reliability and ease of handling.

The airplane hanger at Nemacolin Woodlands is home to one of the few remaining Mailwings. This rare and classic plane was once part of the collection of the late movie star and Hollywood icon Steve McQueen. It is fully airworthy and is flown regularly.

The public is invited and admission is complimentary. For further information, please call 724-329-8555, ext. 6750.
