School district to offer college classes

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

With more and more area residents seeking secondary education courses, the Southeastern Greene School Board announced that it will again be offering college courses, beginning in the spring of 2003. “We are hoping to reestablish college courses here in the spring of 2003,” said district Superintendent Philip Savini Jr.

According to Savini, computer courses have been offered in the past but community interest seemed to drop off.

Savini said that recently there has been an influx of residents seeking such classes.

The courses, which are offered through Westmoreland County Community College, will be held at the high school.

In addition, Savini said the district is working in conjunction with California University of Pennsylvania and with the University of Pittsburgh to allow high school students to take some college courses for a minimal fee, as well as college credit.

Savini said that the program would give students an idea of what college is like and also give them a head start if they eventually attend college.

The school district currently offers online course through Westmoreland County Community College and also offers Distance Learning Courses, a program that gives students the opportunity to take college level courses for college level credit.

“We had one or two kids use it last year,” Savini said.

He noted that he hoped the new programs would encourage more students to participate.

According to Savini, the school district will also be participating in the Drop Out Reclamation Program, which will allow residents throughout the district who dropped out of school to receive high school credit through academic course and projects.

The program is offered in conjunction with the District and Community Action Southwest Family Center and will allow adults to eventually earn their high school diplomas. Savini noted that anyone in the district is eligible for the program.

“Even if they dropped out, but currently live here, they are eligible,” Savini said.
