Activities planned To mark October as Domestic Violence Awareness month, the Domestic Violence Services of Fayette County Inc. plans the following activities:
– Tuesday: Work to End Domestic Violence Day. Participants should wear purple to work.
– Oct. 7: Candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. on the Fayette County Courthouse steps.
– Oct. 9 Health Cares about Domestic Violence Day. Health-care professionals should wear purple.
– Oct. 14-18: Statistical display at the Fayette County Courthouse.
– Oct. 15: Poster contest for Fayette County students in kindergarten through eighth grades.
– Oct. 16: Essay contest for Fayette County students in ninth through 12th grades.
– Oct. 21-25: Empty place at the table display at Penn State Fayette Campus.
Applications accepted
The Salvation Army is taking applications for Christmas Assistance on the following dates: Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31 and Nov. 6, 13 and 14, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Anyone interested must apply on these dates
Applicants must bring proof of address. Eligible zip codes are 15456, 15465, 15472 and 15401. In addition, identification (birth certificates, Social Security or Access cards) must be provided for all household members.
Christmas food baskets and “Treasures for Children,” gifts for children from birth to 13 will be distributed Dec. 14.

Conference scheduled
Open house planned
An open house for prospective students is scheduled for Saturdays, Oct. 5 and 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Ferguson Theater.
