Wayfinding signs erected in Connellsville to help travelers
CONNELLSVILLE – The city, in cooperation with a state agency, is easing the roadway navigation by visitors searching for area attractions. Seven directional signs were been erected recently at various intersections denoting routes to Seven Springs Resort, Fallingwater and the Yough Bike/Hike Trail by the city street department.
According to Vernon Ohler, department foreman, the wayfinding program was initiated in the city a few years ago through the state transportation department and Southwest Pennsylvania Sign Trust.
“Because the city lies within the path to many county-wide attractions, it was chosen to be a participant in the program,” he said.
The sign system is designed to acquaint highway travelers with symbols and colors to lead them to their desired destination.
A feasibility study conducted two years ago determined 40 signs should be placed in the city to give direction to a myriad of locations, including Falcon Stadium, Anchor Glass, Highlands Hospital and the post office.
Councilman Bruce Jaynes, who oversees the street department, said within the year, he hopes additional wayfinding signs would be erected to direct visitors to the municipal building, fire companies, library, schools and parks.
“I think the seven signs are a great start,” he said. “I believe this cooperative effort can only enhance the revitalization of our community and point out our local points of interest to those traveling through the area.
“The idea is to get those bound for somewhere else to stop here and see what Connellsville has to offer.”
