Point Marion allows exceptions to park alcohol ban
POINT MARION – During a special meeting Wednesday, the borough council voted to allow the board to grant one-day exceptions to a ban that forbids the sale and consumption of alcohol within the community park. The council decided to review the borough law after the Point Marion Fire Department asked for special permission to sell beer at a concert during the 2004 Fayette County Fireman’s Convention.
Solicitor Gene Grimm said the council had two options: rescind the ban of alcohol in the park completely or grant one-day exceptions to certain parties.
The council decided that any party who wants to have alcohol within the park must have a minimum $10 million liability insurance coverage, comply with all Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board rules and regulations, have adequate security, comply with all the laws applicable to the consumption of alcohol in public places, agree to hold the borough blameless, restore the park to its original state and pay for additional insurance that the borough may require.
Future requests for exceptions to the borough’s alcohol policy will be made on a case-by-case basis.
Bill Beatty, a volunteer fireman in charge of making concert arrangements, said the fire department is willing to meet all of those stipulations. In addition to beer, the department will sell food, advertisement space and sponsorships in order to raise money, said Beatty.
