By April Straughters 2 min read

LUZERNE TWP. – The Dunlap Creek Historical Society is hosting a meet-the-candidates night Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Penn Craft factory auditorium to familiarize local voters with those seeking office. “We’re hoping to incite interest among the residents and motivate them to vote,” said Bob Hess, president of the historical society.

According to Cheryl Qualters, secretary of the society, the group has invited candidates for township supervisor and the Brownsville Area School Board, as well as John Evans of Hiller and Angela Zimmerlink of Redstone Township, both of whom are running for county commissioners.

“We’re hoping to really introduce the candidates to the public. How do you know who someone is by reading their name on a sign?” Qualters said. “We are hoping to get people educated, and we hope that will give people enough gumption to get out and vote.”

Qualters a moderator will be on hand to filter questions, but she said organizers are still working on a format.

She said she is normally not a political person, but she said she has found that it is good to be involved in politics. “Otherwise you get stepped on,” she added.

She said she hopes by educating the voters, they will be able to make good decisions in the voting booth.

“I’m hoping to get the truth on a number of issues. I’d like to have the people get someone in office who will listen to them,” she said.
