Veterans to take part in support rally for troops
CONNELLSVILLE – Area veterans groups will take part in a Saturday rally being held in support of deployed military personnel and their families. Robert Ruggieri, who is spearheading the event, said participants are being asked to gather at the Shop ‘N Save parking lot at 9 a.m.
After a brief ceremony, those in attendance will march through the city to the War Memorial located at the intersection of Route 119 and Pittsburgh Street, where the Fayette County Veterans Commission and American Legion Post 301 will conduct a flag raising ceremony with Father Michael Bucci leading the invocation.
“For those unable to walk, we’re asking they meet us at the War Memorial about 11 a.m.,” said Ruggieri. “We want as many people as possible to be there.”
The program will also honor those that have died in service to their country.
Ruggieri held a similar event two weeks ago with approximately 75 residents from throughout the area braving cold temperatures and rain to stand along Route 119 and wave flags and signs in support of the soldiers serving in Iraq and the Persian Gulf region.
“I’ve had several requests to hold another one,” said Ruggieri of the Saturday event. “People want our troops to know we here at home support what they are doing.”
After the program, Ruggieri said participants would be invited to stand along the Memorial Bridge to wave flags.
