Martin F. Kimes
Martin F. Kimes, age 84, of Carmichaels, Pa., retired Federal Coal Mine Inspector, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 13, 2003. Born May 29, 1918 in Bishop, Washington County, Pa., he was the son of Martin F. Kimes and Ann Hunter Kimes.
Educated in Cecil Township schools, he graduated from the former Cecil Township High School in 1935.
He spent his working life in the coal industry beginning in 1936 at National No. 3 Mine of United States Steel Corporation in Muse, Pa., where he lived from 1923 until his marriage to Julia Louise Gessler on September 20, 1939 in Cumberland, Maryland, when they moved to Canonsburg, Pa.
Mr. Kimes entered the United States Army during World War II as a Private and was discharged as a First Lieutenant having graduated from Officer Candidate School at the Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served in both France and Germany.
He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association and the National Mine Rescue Association.
He was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church in Carmichaels, Pa.
Upon returning from the service in 1946 he spent 19 years as a Mine Official at Robena Mine.
In 1965 he accepted an appointment from the Federal Bureau of Mines as a Coal Mine Inspector. He worked for different agencies in the Department of Labor as a Coal Mine Inspector and Coal Mine Inspector Supervisor.
He retired in October 1980.
“Marty” served for 12 years as the Executive Officer of an Infantry Company in the 79th Division of the Organized Reserve Corps prior to his transfer to the Retired Reserves in 1958.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; three daughters: Sharon Vajentic from Washington, Pa., Kathleen Duchi from Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gayle Caffrey from Rices Landing, Pa. He has 10 grandchildren: Kirk Vajentic from Stratton, Maine, Sharon Fraley from Canonsburg, Pa., Julie Bish, Steve Duchi III, Ken Duchi and Ryan Duchi all from Pittsburgh, Pa., Corby Dobosh, Katie Caffrey, and B. J. Caffrey all from Rices Landing, Pa., and Marty Caffrey from Dayton, Ohio; and 10 great grandchildren.
Friends and Family will be received at the PAUL MICHAEL LESAKO FUNERAL HOME INC., 204 Dowlin Avenue, Carmichaels, Pa., on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Friends and Family should gather at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 16, by 9 a.m. to proceed in procession to St. Marcellus Roman Catholic Church in Jefferson, Pa., for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Thomas Miller as Celebrant.
Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Pittsburgh, Pa.
