John E. (Sam) Softcheck
John E. (Sam) Softcheck, 81, of Grindstone, Pa., died Sunday, April 20, 2003 in Uniontown Hospital.
He was born August 28, 1921 in Orient, Pa., son of the late Michael A. and Anna Kalafut Softcheck.
He graduated from Redstone High School with the Class of 1940. He was a veteran of World War II stationed in the United States and Germany, was a member of the American Legion Post 51 Uniontown, a member of the Amvets Post 103, Hopwood, a life member of VFW Post 47, Uniontown and was a member and former treasurer of UMWA Local 1248, Maple Creek.
He was an Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 649, Rowes Run, Pa. He received the Order of the Arrow along with his two sons. He was also an avid sports fan.
He was predeceased by brothers Thomas P. Softcheck, Michael A. Softcheck, Jr. and Richard A. Softcheck and a sister Margaret J. Davidson.
He is survived by his wife Mary Louise Baker Softcheck; two sons Terry J. Softcheck of McClellandtown and Robert S. Softcheck and wife Bonnie of Uniontown; six grandchildren Stacey, Kelley, Wendy, Tanya, Terra and Nikolai; seven great grandchildren; sisters Marie Cimini of Arcadia, Calif., Mary Shea of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Anna Rae Williams of Grindstone, Pa.
Friends will be received in the SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 135 Park St., Brownsville, Pa. today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 12 noon until 1 p.m. the hour of service, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Pittavino, former pastor of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Brownsville, Pa., officiating.
Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, with full military rites accorded by VFW Post 47 of Uniontown.
