Scholarships announced Penn State Fayette’s College for Kids Program has announced new scholarship opportunities for Fayette County students in third through fifth grades.
In order to be considered, students must write a 250 word essay entitled “Why I want to attend Penn State Fayette’s College for Kids,” and the student must be a full qualifier in his/her school lunch program.
College for Kids serves over 150 students each summer, ages 6 – 14. The program is an educational, enrichment activity providing students with a supportive and open learning environment. Courses include such areas as computers, the arts and sciences and even basketball school (camp).

The Office of Lifelong Learning’s summer college schedule of classes at California University of Pennsylvania is now available and registrations are currently being accepted.
Classes are offered at the main campus and off-campus sites as well as online.

Rogers to be honored
Seton Hill University, Greensburg, announced it will award four honorary degrees during its Saturday, May 10, commencement exercises in Sullivan Hall on campus, including one posthumously to Fred Rogers who was originally scheduled to serve as Seton Hill’s commencement speaker.
Accepting for Mr. Rogers will be his wife, Joanne Byrd Rogers, who herself will be awarded a degree for her accomplishments as a duo-pianist. The university will also recognize Barbara deCoux Luderowski for her achievements as executive and artistic director of the Mattress Factory, and Steve Forbes, President and CEO of Forbes Inc., who will address the graduates.

Conference attended
A local resident was among 15 West Virginia University McNair Scholars who recently traveled from the Morgantown, W.Va., campus to New York to participate in Binghamton University’s 2003 McNair Research Conference, with seven presenting the results of recent research projects.
McNair Scholars are first generation college students and minority college students preparing for graduate education. The program bears the name of Ronald E. McNair, who died along with six of his astronaut colleagues aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1996.
Included was Jodie Hoover
, a geography major from Brownsville. Her topic was “Climatic Influence of Fire History on Ponderosa Pine Forests on the East Slope of the Cascades, Washington State.” Faculty mentor is Dr. Amy Hessl.

Victory reported
Carmichaels Jr./Sr. High School Team 1 won the 2003 Greene County Envirothon and will compete in the 2003 State Envirothon at Penn State Mont Alto Campus May 19-20.
The 2003 Team members are Jeffrey Balogh, Amanda Hathaway, Christina Kittredge, Christina Kline, Autumn Willis and Ricky Eitner (alternate). The coach is Kevin Willis.
The 20th Annual Pennsylvania Envirothon is meant to test the students’ knowledge of Pennsylvania’s natural resources, while providing them with the ability to address the complex environmental concerns facing today’s world as well as the challenges of tomorrow. Teams rotate through five stations staffed by related agencies. They are aquatics, state Fish & Boat Commission; wildlife, state Game Commission; soils and land use, U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service; forestry, state Department of Community and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry; and the current issue, farmland preservation & conservation.
