William Earl Swearingen
William Earl Swearingen, 84, of Hampden Township, Pa., passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003 in Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg, Pa. He was born November 14, 1918 in Brownsville, Pa., son of Harry V. and Ethel Swearingen.
William served seven years in the military during World War II with service in the European Theatre with the Third Armored Division of the First Army. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.
He retired from Pomeroy’s Department Store where he worked as the Head Carpenter for 28 years.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Lemoyne, Pa., Kabob Hiking Club, Disabled American Veterans, and Third Armored Division Association.
William was a lover of the outdoors and spent many hours fishing and hiking and also enjoyed bowling.
He especially loved being with his family!
He is survived by his wife, Doris M. Swearingen; children: Cheryl L., wife of James C. Ehmer, of Danville, Pa., Debra L., wife of the Rev. Gregory L. Sheffer, Mechanicsburg, Pa., Scott V. Swearingen and wife, Brenda, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Tami S., wife of Thomas J. Zdunski, of Enola, Pa.
His pride and joy were his grandchildren-three grandsons: Gregory Sheffer, Jason A. Sheffer, and Kyle T. Zdunski, five granddaughters: Jamie L. Koppenhaver, Erin M. Swearingen, Kara L. Swearingen, Sarah A. Zdunski, and Katie N. Zdunski; and three great grandchildren: Allison R. Sheffer, Madison R. Sheffer and Lucas William Sheffer.
He is also survived by two brothers: John R. Swearingen and Harry Walter Swearingen both of Brownsville, Pa.
A Memorial Service was held on Monday, July 28, 2003 at 7 p.m. in Grace United Methodist Church, 313 Herman Avenue, Lemoyne, Pa.
Interment was in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
