California council seeks cause of sinkhole

By April Straughters 2 min read

CALIFORNIA – The borough council plans to find the cause of a sinkhole on Second and Wood streets soon. President Art Harris said they Thursday that officials do not know what is causing the sinkhole, but he said they hope to have an “exploratory” done to find the cause.

Councilwoman Amelia Mitchell said old sewage lines could have caused the sinking.

Mitchell said she will present to the council quotes for the repairs at the regular meeting next week.

The board also opened bids for the borough’s municipal waste contract Thursday.

The council received bids from five local companies and will award a three-year contract to one at its next regular meeting.

The lowest bid “with exception” came from County Hauling of Belle Vernon, at $23.56 for the first year, $24.22 the second year and $24.91 the third.

The lowest bid “without exception” came from Waste Management of Washington, at $24 for the first year, $24.48 the second and $24.96.

The council will contact Onyx Waste of McClellandtown to discuss their bidding, which they think may have included only monthly prices instead of quarterly.

The council plans to award contracts at its regular meeting next Thursday. The board also will decide whether to reduce its zoning hearing board from five to three members.
