Odor reported

Local fire, police and Fayette EMS responded late Thursday afternoon to Highlands Hospital after several employees began to experience burning eyes and had to leave the site.

According to Mary Jane Krosoff, chief human resource officer for the hospital, and Erma Hauser, chief nursing officer, a chemical agent was being used to clear a drain in a first-floor utility room, and the odor permeated the hospital admissions desk area and the first-floor hallway.

“It’s very humid and the odor just hung in the air,” said Krosoff.

New Haven Hose Volunteer Fire Co. personnel installed fans to circulate the air while hospital personnel checked portions of the hospital. No one was evacuated.

Charges pending

State police said charges are pending against a Uniontown man who allegedly picked a fight with state trooper Robert Mertz at 9:30 a.m. July 26.

Warrant served

State police said charges were filed against Scott Joseph Downey, 21, of Dunbar on Wednesday after he failed to appear at a hearing Tuesday for allegedly burglarizing the Burger King restaurant at the Laurel Mall on May 17. Downey was arraigned and placed in the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Purse stolen

Tony Shemansky and Misty Shider told state police someone stole a purse and a small amount of money from a Daisytown residence between 2 and 7 a.m. Thursday.

Items stolen

State police said someone stole a portable compact disc player and compact discs from the car of Karen Hyatt of Richeyville between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

Joseph Brady of Richeyville told state police a laptop computer, a cell phone and other items were stolen from his car between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

According to state police, a Normalville man allegedly punched Amy Leighty of White at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday.

Crimes investigated

The borough police department investigated 52 calls in July. A breakdown provided by the department showed one assault, three assists of other departments, one attempted burglary, nine disturbances, two disturbed people, two domestic disputes, four drug activities, five harassment incidents, seven miscellaneous complaints, one missing person, two suspicious activities, three suspicious vehicles, nine thefts, two trespass complaints and one warrant/PFA served. Officers issued seven non-traffic citations, 10 traffic citations and seven warnings and logged 913 miles on patrol vehicles.

Machine damaged

Edgar Gossett, the owner of Tools and Treasures on National Pike East, told Brownsville police Sunday at 11 p.m. that someone threw a rock and damaged a vending machine in front of his business.

Fight reported

Brownsville police said an 11-year-old child punched a 10-year-old child in the face Sunday at South Hill Terrace.

Child flown

Fayette County 911 reported a call about a possible drowning of a child at 7:05 p.m. Thursday in Uniontown’s East End. Uniontown police and Uniontown Firemen’s Ambulance crews were dispatched. The child was flown to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, said the 911 supervisor.

Sometime after 11:30 p.m. Aug. 8, someone cut four tires on a car owned by Julie Davis at 340 Union St.

Sharon Givens of 505 Brashear St. told Brownsville police that her Nextel 590 cellular telephone was lost or stolen around Aug. 7 in the Brownsville area.

Donna Shumar of 426 Union St. told Brownsville police on Aug. 7 that someone tried to enter her home through a back window, damaging the screen.

Lauri Little and Dawn Costello of 324 High St. told Brownsville police on Aug. 5 that someone sliced a swimming pool there with a knife and scratched the passenger side of their car.

Man assaulted

Paul Tichnor, 18, told Brownsville police that he was assaulted in the 100 block of Prospect Street shortly after midnight Aug. 5 as he was walking home to the Brownsville House apartments. Tichnor described his attackers only as three white men.

Passersby found Tichnor on the sidewalk. A green car was seen leaving the area.

Uniontown

Rape arrest

City police arrested Robert Frazee, 38, of 30 Reppert Blvd., Apt. 8, on charges that he raped a girl in a storage trailer at the St. Vincent DePaul Store, where he was a volunteer, on North Mount Vernon Avenue on Aug. 9.

Frazee was arrested at his home shortly afterward and charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault and unlawful restraint. He was arraigned before District Justice Rick Vernon and committed to the Fayette County Prison in lieu of a $100,000 percentage bond.

Juvenile cited

City police cited a juvenile for violating the city’s 11 p.m. curfew after an 11:41 p.m. Wednesday incident at 41 Lenox St. Several other juveniles fled when police arrived, but one stayed, became unruly and was cited, police said.

Citation issued

William Wade Shaffer of Smithfield was cited for disorderly conduct after an incident on Rose Drive at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, state police said.

Windshield smashed

Donald George Meyer of Fairchance told state police that a windshield on his 1989 Buick Century was smashed on West Church Street between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Man not injured

Jeffrey Hartley, 17, of Waynesburg was not injured in a one-vehicle accident on Route 19, about a mile north of Gordon Hill Road, at 5:40 p.m. Aug. 7, state police at Waynesburg said.

Dunkard Twp.

Two cited

Jason M. Cralton, 26, of Bobtown and Lisa R. Nowaczynski, 34, of Dilliner were cited for harassment for fighting on Steele Hill Road at 6 p.m. Sunday, state police at Waynesburg said.
