History event set
The Ligonier Valley Historical Society recently announced that the Compass Inn Museum would host a Living History Weekend on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
This tour will feature the following:
-1799 Stagecoach stop, listed on the National Register of Historic Places
-Demonstrations and discussions on various nineteenth century crafts and skills
-Observing woodworking, blacksmithing and coppering
-Demonstrations of gun making and the associated art of powder horn decorating
-A mapmaker will be on hand to discuss how he created his latest work, a 1770s map of west Pennsylvania
-Other domestic chores will be performed including open hearth cooking, making soap, spinning, weaving and lace making
In addition, children can help dip candles and churn butter. According to Lisa Hays from the historical society, these presentations provide authentic recreations of how things were done in the early 1800s. Crafts vary each day, said Hays.
Hays continued, there will be an encampment of the 60th Royal American Regiment of Foot. The Royal Americans was a force composed of mostly non-English speaking men recruited in the Colonies and led by officers commissioned by the King of England. These troops served during the French and Indian War and Pontiac’s War. Discussions of their engagements and demonstrations of drill techniques are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, said Hays.
Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students through high school and children under the age of five are free.
The special activities are free with admission. Hays said, to take full advantage of the tour and demonstrations, it is suggested that at least two hours be allotted for the visit.
