Samuel J. Canistra, 63, of Republic, Pa., passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2003 in Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. He was born September 20, 1939 son of Anthony “Tony” Canistra and the late Betty Finan Canistra Bowen.

Samuel was a graduate of Redstone High School, Class of 1957, a Veteran of the U. S. Army, and was formerly employed as a Coal Miner and also as a Surveyor for PennDOT.

He was also an avid sports fan, excelled in basketball and played softball for many years. He was a member of the Fairbank Rod & Gun Club.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Betty and Jim Bowen, grandparents, Samuel and Josephine Canistra and Joseph and Catherine Finan, and a special aunt, Esther Guerrieri.

Surviving are two daughters: Samantha Rockwell and her husband, William, of Uniontown, Pa., and Kelly Canistra of McClellandtown, Pa.; his father and stepmother, Anthony “Tony” and Evelyn Canistra of Uniontown, Pa.; a sister, Toni Takacs of Uniontown, Pa.; and aunts, uncles, cousins and many caring friends.

Friends will be received in the ROBERT T. KISH FUNERAL HOME INC., Legion Street, Republic, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, August 16, from 11 a.m. to Noon, at which time a Blessing Service will be held with Rev. Fr. Stephen Bugay officiating.

Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown.
