Hearing delayed in robbery case

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

A preliminary hearing for a Uniontown man charged with robbing and assaulting a handicapped man in a wheelchair, was delayed Monday and he was released on unsecured bond. Uniontown police charged Earl Robert Casteel, 20, of 21 W. Coffey St., with robbery, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, criminal conspiracy and harassment for the Aug. 10 incident.

Before agreeing to reduce Casteel’s bail from $100,000 straight to $25,000 unsecured, District Justice Mark Blair ordered him not to have any contact with the victim and not to be outside after dark.

Police said Casteel was with two other men who approached Tyrone Hyatt in an alley behind 203 Gallatin Ave. at 4:17 p.m.

They asked him if he had any money and two of them reached into his pockets. Before they fled, they flipped him over in his wheelchair while he was strapped in.

Hyatt removed the strap and tried to run after them, but Casteel pushed him to the ground, punched him several times, took his watch and fled.

However, he slipped and fell, and was found lying unconscious by police with a watch next to him.

Hyatt suffered a minor cut on his arm and his wheelchair had minor damage.

A new hearing date has not yet been scheduled.
