August J. Hruska, 89, of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 9:10 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2003 in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, Pa. He was born September 15, 1913 in Czechoslovakia, a son of Stephen Hruska and Catherine Stehel Hruska.

Mr. Hruska was a 1934 graduate of the former German Township School, McClellandtown, Pa., where he was an avid football player.

Early in his working life he was employed by the H. C. Frick Company.

Later, he worked at the Crucible Fuel Company Mine until the mine closed in 1963.

Mr. Hruska was then hired by Gateway Coal Company as a Mining Machine Operator and worked there until his retirement in 1976.

He resided at his current residence in Cumberland Township since 1941 and was an avid gardener.

Mr. Hruska was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church in Carmichaels and Gateway Local 6330 of the United Mine Workers of America.

On September 7, 1935 he married Mildred Baker Hruska, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters: Mildred Bair and her husband, John, of Carmichaels, Mary “Ibby” Levine and her husband, Howard, of Middletown, Maryland, and Barbara Smith and her husband, Robert, of Stafford, Virginia; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; a brother, Stephen Hruska and his wife, Margaret, of Euclid, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a grandson, Richard Bair, two brothers, Edward and Ignatius Hruska, and his parents.

Friends will be received in the YOSKOVICH FUNERAL HOME, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street, Route 88, Carmichaels, Pa., today from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, August 26, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. the time of a Blessing Service.

A Mass of Christian Burial follows at 11 a.m. in St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels, with Rev. Fr. John M. Bauer and Rev. Fr. Francis A. Nazimek as Concelebrants.

Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church (for Pew Restoration), 408 Route 88, Carmichaels, PA 15320.

Parish Vigil Service will be held in the Funeral Home on Monday at 7:15 p.m.
