Brownsville reschedules light-up night

By Christine Haines 2 min read

BROWNSVILLE – Last Friday’s rain postponed Light-Up Night in Brownsville, but the parade and other festivities should go off without a hitch this Friday. The Greater Brownsville Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the parade, Christmas sing-along and treats for area children. The parade will start at 5:30 at the Hiller Fire Hall and will wind through Hiller, Brownsville, West Brownsville and Blainesburg. The major streets along the parade route will be marked with luminarias and residents are asked to set out luminarias in their own neighborhoods and to turn on their porch lights and Christmas lights.

The parade will end around 7:15 at the Brownsville No. 1 (North Side) Fire Hall where treats will be handed out to children ages 12 and under. Santa will also be on hand and the Brownsville Area High School choir will be singing.

The chamber is also sponsoring its annual Christmas ornament sale.

This year’s ornament is red and features pictures of the Brownsville No. 1 and South Brownsville fire halls and fire trucks.

It is the 21st in a series of ornaments featuring Brownsville points of interest. The ornaments will be available for sale at the Brownsville No. 1 fire hall during Light-Up Night. Chamber director Scott Bowman said the fire departments play a major role in many of the annual chamber activities and are a fitting subject for the collector’s edition ornaments.

“We felt it was appropriate. It’s time for them to show off their trucks and equipment,” Bowman said.

Bowman said 300 ornaments have been ordered, though it is possible that an extra case of 48 will be ordered.

“The firefighters expect to sell a case themselves,” Bowman said. “Based on early sales, we’re going to have to order some more.”

The ornaments are being sold for $8 each, with the proceeds supporting chamber activities throughout the year. In addition to the Light-Up Night sales, the ornaments are also available at the chamber office, which is located inside Bowman Insurance and Real Estate, at Brownsville Bus Lines, Brownsville Free Public Library and at the Flatiron Building Heritage Center.
