Dunbar Township supervisors say they’re ready for winter storm

By Jackie Beranek 2 min read

DUNBAR TWP. – Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. The township supervisors are ready for the first significant snowfall of the season, according to acting supervisor chairman Gene Frazier.

“The trucks are loaded with cinders, and we are ready to roll,” Frazier said Thursday night. “The National Weather Service is calling for five to 10 inches of snow and we are ready.”

The weather service placed Fayette County under a winter weather warning until early Saturday morning.

In other unrelated matters, the supervisors passed a resolution extending the life of the Yough Sanitary Authority. Solicitor Don McCue said the resolution will allow the authority to continue to operate for another 50 years.

The authority’s charter was scheduled to expire May 3, 2015. Dawson and Vanderbilt boroughs must now approve the resolution. The Yough Sanitary Authority is in the beginning stages of a $7.9 million sewer project.

The supervisors scheduled their reorganization meeting Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. and their next regular meeting on Dec. 31, at a time to be determined.

In another matter, the supervisors adopted the 2004 budget and kept the township’s tax rate the same at 0.578. In fact, the supervisors have raised taxes for 48 years, said Supervisor Ron Keller.

The most expensive item in the budget is highways, roads and streets at $643,000, followed by miscellaneous expenditures or expenses, which includes insurance, payroll and taxes, at $320,000.

Township revenues are derived from taxes ($528,800); licenses and permits ($200); fines and forfeits ($13,000); interest, rents and royalties ($4,500); intergovernmental revenue ($248,337); miscellaneous revenue ($20,000); and other financing sources ($55,100).

The supervisors spend $80,000 a year for general government, $75,000 a year for public safety, $12,000 a year for health and welfare and $5,000 for culture and recreation.

In an unrelated matter, the supervisors agreed to fix a ditch on Marigrace Butela’s property.
