No one hurt in school bus collision

By Steve Ferris 1 min read

Two buses carrying seventh- and eighth-grade students from Ben Franklin School were involved in an accident around 3 p.m. Friday on Morgantown Street at the intersection with Highland Avenue. Uniontown Area School District Superintendent Charles Machesky said students reported that kids throwing rocks at the intersection distracted the driver of Rittenhouse Bus Lines bus 14U, causing him to hit Edenfield Stages bus 225, which was stopped at a traffic light. He said bus 14U had 30 students on board and bus 225 contained 45 students. No injuries were reported, and all the students were transferred to other buses.

Machesky said the buses were on their way to the high school, where the Ben Franklin students transfer to another bus for the ride home and high school students board for their ride home.

City police said the driver of bus 14U was George E. Soverns Jr., 31, of Vanderbilt and Gary D. Seliga, 53, of McClellandtown, was driving bus 225. Police said they will investigate the report of kids throwing rocks at the intersection.

Bus 14U sustained moderate front-end damage and was towed from the scene, while bus 225 had minor rear-end damage. Rittenhouse and Edenfield, which are contractors for the district, own the buses.
