Local man celebrates a century of life

Robert Hagar Sr., who was joined by his wife of 79 years, Zelda Matthews Hagar of Lemont Furnace, celebrated his 100th birthday on Sept. 20. He was honored on Sept. 21 when about 160 family members and friends attended a surprise birthday party. Special guests included Fayette County Commissioner Vince Vicites and state Sen. Richard Kasunic.

Kasunic presented Hagar with an award from the Senate, which recognized his accomplishments with his family. Hagar’s family includes four children, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Hagar also received a letter from Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, congratulating him and wishing him a happy 100th birthday.
