Luzerne supervisors seek funding for prison access road

By April Straughters 2 min read

LUZERNE TWP. – Township supervisors adopted a resolution Tuesday to commit their efforts to identify and secure funding for design and construction of an access road to SCI-Fayette. Supervisors have named the road Intuition Park Way.

Supervisor Ron DeSalvo said the access road will be a “connector road” between the Mon/Fayette Expressway Interchange near Telegraph and Shepler roads and SCI-Fayette. He said an exact route has yet to be determined.

Rod Schad, a township resident, asked supervisors about the access road and asked why he hasn’t heard of the plans for the new road before.

“This has the same smell as the state prison. You never tell anyone what’s going on,” he said.

DeSalvo explained that Intuition Park Way has been discussed publicly, but he said it was always referred to as FAECO (named after the Fayette Expressway Completion Organization) Drive Extension.

He said FAECO Drive, which will be constructed from the Monongahela River bridge also to be built as part of the Mon/Fayette Expressway, will replace Alecia Road and Intuition Park Way will extend from that road, providing a direct route to SCI-Fayette.

DeSalvo said that U.S. Rep. John Murtha (D-Johnstown) secured $3 million to begin the development.

DeSalvo said the township will have to determine a source of matching funds for the project.

“We anticipate the need for nearly $1 million in state and local matching funds for the initial part of the project,” he said. “During the next couple of months we will be meeting with state agencies in an attempt to secure the matching funds.”

In other business DeSalvo said that the speed limit along Craftmore road will remain at 35 mph. He said a study showed that to be the appropriate speed limit.

The township office will be close on Christmas and also on Thursday, Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.

The annual reorganization meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5 with the regular meeting to follow.
