By Patty Shultz 2 min read

CONNELLSVILLE TWP. – The supervisors will review bids from three refuse hauling firms before naming a contracted garbage hauler for the township. Waste Management of North Huntingdon, Fayette Waste of Waltersburg and Onyx Waste Service of McClellandtown submitted proposals at Thursday’s meeting.

Waste Management holds the service contract for the township.

According to the bid from Waste Management, residents would be charged a monthly fee of $9.57 the first year of the five-year contract with subsequent annual increases ranging from 24 cents to 26 cents.

Fayette Waste offered its residential services at $8.71 per month throughout the length of the contract, and Onyx proposed a monthly fee of $7.60 for the five-year contract.

The supervisors did not disclose the rates for commercial garbage collection.

Supervisor Tammy Mader said she was uncertain about the amount residents are paying for the service.

The supervisors expect to award a contract Jan. 5 when they meet to reorganize.

Turning to other matters, Mader and Supervisor Chairman Don Hann approved the 2004 township budget, which maintains the current real estate tax rate of 1.033 mills. Supervisor Janice Fosbrink was absent.

The budget lists $388,781 in revenue and $387,624 in expenditures next year.

The supervisors also took the following action:

– Directed Widmer Engineering Inc. to determine a course of action to address flooding problems on the property of Fred Elcock.

– Approved the purchase of a portable radio, a radio battery and a turnout coat for the Connellsville EMA, at a total cost of $721.50

– Accepted the resignation of Denise Richter as secretary for the township zoning board.

– Announced that the Connellsville Township Volunteer Fire Co. will escort Santa Claus throughout the township Tuesday and Wednesday, weather permitting. The company also will judge outdoor lighting displays for its annual light-up night Tuesday and Wednesday. Township homeowners wishing to take part in the contest are asked to register with the company by calling 724-628-3490. Monetary prizes of $100, $75, and $50 will be awarded to the top three winners.
