George J. Albert, 80, of Waynesburg, Pa., died Thursday, December 11, 2003 in John Heinz Health Care Center, Fox Chapel, Pa., following a lengthy illness.

He was born February 24, 1923 in Waynesburg, Pa., son of Sherwin Albert and Penelopie Elefterious Albert.

Mr. Albert was a member of St. George Episcopal Church in Waynesburg.

He was a Veteran of World War II who served with the United States Army in the 1st Battalion 60th Infantry 9th Infantry Division. He was in several major battles including Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes, and Africa. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with six Bronze Stars.

He was also the European Theatre of War Heavy Weight Boxing Champion.

Mr. Albert owned the building that housed the first Courthouse in Greene County, Pa., which is now The Greene County Historical Society.

For 30 years he was a self-employed Merchant who owned and operated the G. J. Albert Company.

On June 15, 1947 he married Theresa Balazick Albert, who survives.

Also surviving are one Daughter, Eln Albert Melby of San Diego, California; one Grandson, Jason Albert Melby; three Sisters: Ann Scott of Waynesburg, Pa., Mary Scott and Kathryn Menni both of Uniontown, Pa.; one Brother, Thomas B. Albert of Waynesburg, Pa.; several Nieces and Nephews.

A Son, Blair Albert, two sisters, Sophia Albert and Helen Georgalas, two Brothers, Edward Albert and A. S. Albert, and Parents preceded him in death.

The Family will receive Friends at the MILLIKEN AND THROCKMORTON FUNERAL HOME INC., 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, Pa., on Tuesday, December 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held in St. George Episcopal Church, Bonar Avenue, Waynesburg, Pa., on Wednesday, December 17, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Peter Ostrander officiating.

Interment will follow in Oakmont Cemetery, Franklin Township, Pa., where Military Honors will be accorded by V. F. W. Post 4793, James Farrell American Legion Post 330, and Disabled American Veterans Post 123 all of Waynesburg.
