Paul William Zavatchan
Paul William Zavatchan, 78, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2003. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Paula Louise Lux Zavatchan.
He was born in Leisenring, Pa., February 25, 1925, and retired from Sears Roebuck and Company. He resided in Honolulu, Hawaii, for 10 years and relocated to Jacksonville in 1987.
While living in Jacksonville, Paul was an Eucharistic Minister with Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree Knight with The Knights of Columbus, and a volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul Hospital.
Paul was also a Fourth Degree Knight with The Knights of Columbus in Honolulu.
While living in Honolulu he freely toured island visitors showing them sights that were only experienced by the local inhabitants. For his Aloha spirit he was given a commendation by Senator Spark Matsunaga and the Hawaii Visitors Bureau presented him with the illustrious Mahalo Award for having exceptional ability in demonstrating Hawaii’s traditional Aloha Spirit and for contributing immeasurably to Hawaii’s future.
He also enjoyed volunteering as a Marshal on the 17th green at the now Sony Open in Honolulu.
He also chartered the Aloha Mended Hearts.
Paul is survived by his two sons: Paul “Stretch” Zavatchan Jr. and wife Lisa and Martin Geza Zavatchan and wife Myra; two daughters: Christine Bartruff and husband Jack and Debra Rulewski; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Gaza Paul Lux and wife Tonya of Addison, Pa.; sister-in-laws: Diana Buzonas and husband Robert of Uniontown, Pa., and Mitzi Austin and husband James of Hawaii; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Friends will be received in the STEPHEN E. KEZMARSKY III FUNERAL HOME AT 71 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, Uniontown, Pa., on Monday from Noon to 2 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, December 16, until 10:30 a.m. when a Blessing Service will be held.
A Mass of Christian Burial follows at 11 a.m. in St. Therese de Lisieux Roman Catholic Church, Mill Street, Uniontown, with Rev. Fr. Kenneth Zaccagnini, V.F., as Celebrant.
Interment will follow in Mount Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa.
