By Frances Borsodi Zajac 3 min read

Herald-Standard readers contributed another $1,025 to the 2003 Give A Christmas campaign, boosting the total to $10,612.38. “That’s wonderful,’ said Sparkle, the Christmas star, “but we’re still a long way from our goal of raising $40,000 for the Salvation Army. Our deadline is noon next Tuesday because we want to report our final total in the Christmas Eve edition of the Herald-Standard. Won’t you help us?’

The latest donations came from Uniontown, Perryopolis, Hopwood, Smithfield, Brownsville, Star Junction, Newell, Smithfield, New Salem and Vanderbilt.

They included a $300 donation from Theodore R. Smith Trucking Company of Smithfield and $100 donations from anonymous in Hopwood, Robert Uhrin of Star Junction and Dan and Mary Jane Glitz and Thorpe of Uniontown. Groups that participated included the American Legion Post 753 of New Salem.

Sparkle also received some nice notes:

“Dear Sparkle, We give this gift in honor of our two precious grandsons, Tyler and Zachary, in hope that it will help other children have a Merry Christmas.’ Bill and Penn Dean of Vanderbilt.

“From Robert F. Rae in memory of my wife, Helen, who I miss everyday and especially during this Christmas season.’ Robert Rae of Uniontown.

“Dear Sparkle, Enclosed is $100 in memory of my dear wife Sarah Uhrin, who passed away June 6. She was a very giving and generous person to everyone. May God bless you and all the wonderful people involved. Merry Christmas.’ Robert Uhrin of Star Junction.

“Dear Sparkle, We hope you make your goal. This is to go to the Smithfield-Fairchance area in memory of family members we have lost and in honor of our fine grandchildren. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. God bless.’ Joe and Joyce Embacher of Smithfield.

“Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us,’ said Sparkle. “I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and I hope that everyone out there can also help us to make others happy at Christmas. Won’t you participate? The deadline is just days away.’

To contribute, send your donation to Give A Christmas, P.O. Box 1147, Uniontown 15401 or bring your donation to the front desk of the Herald-Standard offices in Connellsville, Brownsville and Uniontown weekdays during business hours.
